Postpartum Care Doesn’t End at 6 Weeks
We spend months preparing for birth…
We take classes, read books, interview doulas, craft a birth plan, and imagine how we’ll welcome our baby into the world. But few of us prepare for what happens after birth.
Few of us even know we need to.
The truth is, the postpartum season is not a six-week recovery window, and it’s disheartening and even laughable that in 2025, there is still an expectation of women to “bounce back” into life with little support and care.
Postpartum is a profound and ongoing transition that deeply impacts women physically, emotionally, and spiritually, unfolding over months and even years.
The 6-Week Myth
In our current healthcare system, most women receive just one postpartum checkup, typically at six weeks. At that visit, many are told they’re “cleared” — to exercise, have sex, go back to work, while “taking it easy". They may be given a brief screening for postpartum depression, but overall, this level of care does not meet the often overwhelming needs women have in this transition time.
What if your body still feels tender, exhausted, or inflamed?
What if you’re crying every day, anxious about everything, or unable to sleep?
What if you don’t even recognize yourself in the mirror?
What if you have to go back to work before you’re ready because we have no national paid maternity leave?
You’re not broken, you’re human, and the six-week mark isn’t the finish line. It’s barely the beginning of your lifelong journey as a mother.
The Reality of the Postpartum Body and Mind
Birth, no matter how it unfolds, is a major physiological event. The uterus alone takes six weeks to return to its original size, but the full recovery of your pelvis, hormones, energy, and emotional regulation takes much longer, especially if stress levels are high.
The postpartum body is healing from:
Hormonal shifts that rival adolescence in their intensity
Blood loss and tissue repair
Changes in posture, digestion, and circulation
Sleep deprivation and constant cortisol activation
The emotional and identity transformation that comes with motherhood
We’re also navigating new dynamics — in our partnerships, our friendships, our sense of self, and our relationship with time and rest.
No one walks through that in six weeks. And no one should do it alone.
The Drop-Off in Support
If I could summarize the many conversations I’ve had with women about this over the last 15 years, including my own experiences birthing two daughters, it’s this:
During pregnancy, you’re surrounded by attention and care. You have regular check-ins with your OB or midwife, frequent ultrasounds, childbirth classes, and sometimes a community of other expecting parents.
Then, your baby arrives. The focus shifts almost entirely to your child. You might see your provider once more, and then, unless you have supportive friends and family, or hire help in the form of a postpartum doula, lactation consultant, or massage therapist, you’re on your own.
This drop-off can feel jarring, especially if you’re struggling with breastfeeding, sleep deprivation, anxiety, or physical pain. For some, it’s the first time they realize just how demanding this season of life is.
What True Postpartum Care Looks Like
True postpartum care honors the whole woman — body, mind, and spirit. It recognizes that your healing and thriving are central to your baby’s well-being.
At Well Woman Co., we’re tired of seeing women fall by the wayside during this crucial transition time. We believe a supported postpartum allows us to integrate our birth experience, setting us up for greater confidence in motherhood. And for some of us, rest, slowing down, and trusting ourselves is difficult - like a whole new skillset- that warrants guidance and gentle accountability.
As a holistic nurse and mom of two daughters, my experiences, personally and professionally, led me to create the Well Momma Circle™ to offer the level of care that every woman deserves. This nurse-led, safe space is designed to bridge the gap between medical care and everyday life — offering integrative, holistic support that meets women where they are and supports them in creating healthy lifestyles and habits that can set them up for ongoing health through all seasons of womanhood.
In this space, you’ll gain tools and wisdom to understand your body and how your daily thoughts, choices, and actions shape your health and life. We focus on rest, nourishment, emotional regulation, body awareness, and supportive community so you can feel confident and connected on your motherhood journey.
You Deserve More Than a Checkup
You deserve to be seen, heard, and supported as the whole human you are — not just as a mother, but as a woman navigating one of life’s biggest transformations.
A lack of care and integration during this crucial time can set us up for ongoing struggle- physically, mentally, and emotionally.
We deserve better.
The Well Momma Circle is here to hold all that this season of life brings with skilled, compassionate professionals who walk with you through it.
If you’re pregnant, in your first year after birth — or even if it’s been a few years and you’re still finding your footing — we’d love for you to join us.
